Well, there aren’t too many pictures as we were busy as heck!
Thanks to all that came out on such a blustery night to celebrate this stunning new work with us! It’s been much too long since Seattle’s had a new book by Melinda Mueller and such a pleasure to hear from both Karinna (it’s our first time meeting her in person!) and Syrinx Effect.
Please join us as we celebrate the publication of The After.
The first book by Seattle poet, Melinda Mueller, since her award winning “What the Ice Gets”. This book is single poem “sorrowing the world” we will alter and leave unseen. A meditation on extinction and the anthropocene, it blends science and poetry with the urgency of heartbreak.
Interspersed with the poem is the stunning subarctic art of Karinna Gomez, a print maker currently teaching in Alaska and represented by Davidson Galleries. She will be discussing her work and we’ll have a nice selection of originals to look at (and note, she has a meet & greet at Davidson on October 9th).
The Seattle experimental jazz duo, Syrinx Effect (Kate Olson and Naomi Siegel) will be performing music commissioned specifically for The After.
This will be a rare opportunity to meet the entire group behind the making of “The After”, as it is likely to be the only time we will have all four collaborators in the same room at the same time! The reading and performance will start sharply at 7 pm and will be followed by a reception and opportunity to meet the artists.
Please note: The location of the SAAS Stream Building is on Spring street, between 12th and 13th.
We are excited to officially publish The After today. Our third book, it clearly points the direction we’ve been striving toward and how we are envisioning our books for 2017 and beyond. It’s a sumptuous blend of poetry and art with commissioned music along with it.
Sometimes poetry comes to one for delight or comfort. Certainly, some of the projects we are working with authors, don’t have the intense sadness of this poem. But in this case, I would say it is almost a duty it is to offer this serious meditation on one of the most concerning aspects of climate change: the acceleration of the mass extinction underway.
